Tiara Out Today!

It's my birthday today (aherm, cough, pretends to mumble how many years). And usually I don't make a fuss.

Today is different - I now have someone fabulous to share my birthdays with in future - Kate Middleton. Yes ... the beautiful, dazzling, chic and gorgeous lady herself.

All these years and 9th Jan was a pretty gloomy time to have a birthday (everyone's in post Xmas hols gloom and the shops are full of sales tat so vouchers have to be lovingly stored and not spent!) Anyhoo...

Now I'm birthdaymates with someone very groovy. How good is that?! Tiaratastic.

Birthday booty details - amber jewellery (insert 'wooo-fancy yerself' noise); slippers (yes, I get off on slippers and I don't mean the Cinderella kind); pyjamas so smooth I'll feel like a feather on the breeze (yes I get off on soft pyjamas - it's my birthday and I'll strop if I want to). A Nina Harrington book I wanted (yes, yes and thrice yes!) A big book of The Jackie (showing my age - but very good!) And finally chocolate! Cue large smile.

P.S. On the down side Pocket Novels haven't arrived yet. So still stalking the postman - it should be soon though!

Writing Challenge

You may spot from the word worm in the sidebar that I'm currently doing a 100k in 100 days challenge (for more info click on the link above the wordcount bar!) I'm at 11% (of my first 50k target) and it's day five. And I'm determined to do it with a lightness of heart! I'm aiming for slow, steady and enjoyable (sometimes I hare off and run out of steam 'tis true.)

Anyway - just to say I think commiting to a writing challenge like this one is a great way to start the New Year.

News coming soon about 'Pitching In' (and hopefully a cover). I'm hoping that a copy may drop through the door next week (cue excitement) and I anticipate it may be in the shops week of the 26th Jan. Did I mention how much I love DC Thomson Pocket novel covers? Well, I have a big CRUSH on them. They're beautiful and I always look foward to my two titles a month arriving on the mat.

So I will definitely be stalking the postman (sorry postie, I'll try not to scare you - forgive me! It's a writer's angst and ecstacy thing.)

An Ode To Matchmakers

Psst - I know I'm interupting Christmas but ... is it just me or are Matchmakers an essential part of the holidays?

Note: I am not talking about an addiction to dating sites here. Matchmakers are rather moreish long stick-like sweets that come in mint or orange and are perfect for stuffing in with one finger and munching right through to fin. Perfect for reclining on couch whilst watching TV and slurping a hot beverage (or egg nog if you're brave - bleh!) They also smell just like Christmas in a box. Sadly the boxes aren't very big.

Just had to note that this year I have developed a great affection for them - it's been like welcoming back an old, beloved friend. They are truly a necessity of the season! Must buy more in the sales - and just wanted to flag up my appreciation. Let's hear it for twig-like choc snax.

Nanny Audio Review

Thank you Maggie at Audiobook Fans for this review of Nanny Behaving Badly in audio format which had slipped under my lazy radar- read it here!

And here's a highlight:

The Nanny Behaving Badly audiobook was recently released by Iambik Audio and proves to be a great romantic splurge. Maddie is spunky, smart and inventive. Lyle is sexy, rich and driven. The magnetism between the two is palpable and rises immediately after their first encounter.

I loved the relationship between Lyle and Maddie and how much you wanted her to want him, to need him in more ways than one.

Maggie confesses in her review that she isn't a romance fan so this was her initiation - but she enjoyed it so big thank yous. Yey! I'm juggling writing with Christmas right now - why do I always push to the wire?!?!?! Answer - because baste my steaming puddings, I'm very very silly indeed.

Christmas and Jason Lee

Jingle Bells ahoy! It's almost Christmas. Exciting and busy time and not long now to wait.

We've had a visit to Santa, a nursery concert, a pantomime. Just the Christmas Parties now.

And yesterday I took the dear daughters to see Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Their choice (I wanted Arthur Christmas, hey ho). So imagine my surprise when I realised - how much I still admire Jason Lee (see below) and was rather pleased we'd gone. A few more years in age really suits him and I've decided to steal him for use as my current hero inspriration. Win win.

Now that's what I call an early Christmas present. Thanks Alvin!

Edinburgh Sparkles

I am loving the current Edinburgh city centre Christmas advertising - who could resist it?

Shopping ... coffees and cake in the German market ... a trip around the ice rink to round it all off. Or maybe a visit to the beerkeller whilst browsing the baubles?

Anyway I'm using this as a cue to say - if you like the Christmas vibe - the Edinburgh German market allure - and you haven't read Nanny Behaving Badly yet - then this is the perfect time.

I'm having an end of November clear out. Trying to bring some order before the December chaos begins. I'm secretly looking forward to said December chaos. At the weekend the kidlets had photos taken inside a Giant Snowglobe! Such fun - so I guess it's already begun!

This week I've sent in a novella submission. I don't imagine I will hear anything on that one until a few months into 2012.

I've also started playing with something new. Hurray.

So back to the clearing duties. In summary, so far - three bags to the dump (two recycled). And still more to sort. Slow but sure. Maybe Santa could spare an Organiser Elf to take me in hand before December kicks in?

Thanking The Universe

We survived the Titanic showcase - very well done P4 (actually we didn't survive, the passenger names I picked from the hat didn't make it but I'm moving on swiftly on that one!) The highlights - we enjoyed jelly with floating icebergs and tapioca amongst other delights!

In other news I've finished the latest book - just needs a good hard polish and we're done (anyone know where to buy a novel 'tumbler' where I can get it to a clean, sharp shine in record time?) Perhaps that's an invention for the future - universe, over to you!

On the domestic front - the superstore man's just delivered five mins before his due time (now that's service), I've just re-ordered prescriptions online and am therefore feeling tickety boo in the e-organising section of my life. Thanks and appreciation for online wonderfulness in general and avoiding lengthy shopping trips and phone calls.

What next? Washing pile! And for that I can only be thankful for Mr Wash And Mr Tumble who after a bit of heavy feeding will take care of it for me. Except of course the ironing ...that might be pushing my luck. And asking too much of a very gracious universe.

Big Splash!

Today is a much anticipated one - my eldest (P4) has invited me and youngest in to her project showcase! They are studying The Titanic and eldest is completely obsessed and smitten with the topic. Which I am pleased about; when she likes something - she loves it to pieces!
So today we're going to be treated like first class passengers aboard The Titanic and though I'm delighted to be asked to go ... am I allowed to feel even just a bit of trepidation? Having seen the movie.

Sorry for my blog absence but I have been busy, honest.

I've a book to finish (here's hoping this weekend will crack it!) and of course it's been Halloween with all manner of preps to make - pumpkins come and pumpkins go. Plus a new book is shaking its 'listen to me now' stick at me in my head! Sometimes my brain feels very full of characters and ideas and conversations etc etc ...And frankly it gets hard to think straight!

So here I am briefly. And since the smallest kidlet has just walked in in the buff singing songs - I'm not here for long.

I think (she said thinning her lips in apology) I've finished the bulk of my Xmas shopping. Oops I said the X word. Soz.

Anyway - I can't stand waiting. I can't stand queues, busy shops, carols a go go. The hunt to find the right gift tags after losing the ones I had etc etc. I prefer to enjoy the Xmas ambience by doing fun things (not hunting down tat!!) So I've stocked up. And I'm fed up of it before the season's even started. Hum bug. Time to forget about it all until December. jx

P.S. I have been watching Paul and Isobel from Monarch Of The Glen a lot. And here's more ... plus here's Monarch Of The Glum (I still laugh at the guinea pigs!)

Acceptance

Acceptance is the key to life = wise words! And I've just had a surprise acceptance - from My Weekly Pocket Novels.

My highland estate story has just been accepted for future publication - it's the first full length novel I ever had a stab at. (Fortunately it's been improved via polishing and a smidge of learning how to do it better!) The story is a tribute to my deep affection for Monarch Of The Glen (especially Paul and Isobel - You Tube them if you want a taster of the chemistry!)

If you haven't already tried My Weekly Pocket Novels, do. They'll keep you enthralled and reading to The End. I look forward to the postman arriving with the new ones each month.

Saving Pennies

We have a big tin in our cupboard into which we regularly decant small change. I usually forget about it unless I am moving it around when tidying out the aforementioned cupboard. Or playing counting pennies games with the kids.

So this week - during a clearout - I recognised that the tin was hard to move and full. Very heavy to lift in fact. So I realised it might be time to visit the Coinstar machine at the supermarket.

Imagine my surprise when after much pinging and chinging into the machine (and a very heavy trip from the car with the change bag) I hauled £55! Hurray! Needless to say I did the sensible thing - and put the amassed fortune onto my supermarket Christmas saver's card. Small acorns. That grow into a nice nest egg for the Christmas trolley fund!

In other news, I've just noticed that the old version of Nanny Behaving Badly has reached ebay. Fortunately it's listed as unavailable as it's now been re-released. Anyway - explanation - I've never had a book featured on Ebay before. This is my first ever writing Ebay moment. So reverence is required. Note to self: GATHER AND CALM.

Lyle strode to the edge of the tub and helped her back out. When he pulled her to his side she was ludicrously covered in white foam and they were inches apart. In stark comparison he was still dry. And so was her mouth when she looked up at the vision of all man poster-perfect body, his well-muscled arms, chest and athletic legs in full view.

Maddie cursed her own impulses when she realised her robe was soaked, hanging open and dripping around her feet. There were suds balls in her hair.

‘You might have warned me you’re into foam parties,’ he said wryly. ‘There are people out there who’d pay good money to watch you.’

‘Shall I call 999?’ she asked meekly.Lyle laughed and it proved instantly infectious, causing her to giggle along as she stood dripping and covered in slippery foam. Nice way to impress the boss, Adams!

‘I’m sorry, Lyle,’ she said, knowing the laughter still didn’t detract from the crimson blush at her own crazy behaviour. ‘I’ve done it again, haven’t I? Like I did in the café. What is it with me and acting in haste?’

Lyle untied her robe for her. ‘You’d better take that off for starters.’ Him slipping the wet fabric from her shoulders made her gulp and shiver. She watched as he threw the sopping garment away. Became ultra aware of herself standing before him in a swimsuit like an unruly street urchin.

‘Is saying sorry enough for you to overlook this incident?’ she asked.

‘No. I want to take the moral high-ground for a bit longer. Make you squirm.’ He scooped up a large foamy wad and split it in two, then put it on her shoulders. The hairs on her body reacted to the slight contact. She wanted more. And that would be a very bad move.

Maddie removed some foam from her hair and blew it back at him. ‘Wise guy, huh?’

Like the exhibitionist non-carer that she was, Katie swivelled fully in her seat and munched on her rocket and chicken pizza. She spotted him, extended a hand to wave in an obvious fashion and called over, ‘Yoo-hoo! Max! Join us, won’t you?’

‘Katie! Do you really have to?’ Anya hissed.

But the comment came too late, as Katie had already found him a chair to draw to their table. And with a smile Max was approaching.

‘Caught out ordering take-aways?’ Katie probed.

‘I’m on call. Late dinner. Couldn’t face cooking. Lame excuse but true. In the face of a San Remo pizza takeaway menu I submit every time. That’s what I get for pinning it to the fridge. Serves me right – no restraint whatsoever.’

He and Anya shared a simmering glance.

Was it meaningfully dealt? She barely knew her own name under that stare, let alone what red-hot looks meant.

Under his gaze and his steady smile, Anya felt obliged to smile again too.

His lip curled slightly in a look she’d observed on film stars. Successful, sexy ones that were known woman-magnets. And from the way nearby female diners were waving and greeting him, Max lived up to the analogy.

Rain, rain, rain

It's raining hard. Again. I am feeling sorry for the schoolkids who haven't had a great run of weather.

Our holiday break was lovely but there was a lot of rain. The kagoul is a mighty weapon however.

I haven't achieved much writing progress but I do live in hope that it will change once school attendance is resumed.

I have three subs out there currently. Trying not to think about those (send them out then start something new). So on with the writing and the waiting and ya boo to the rain.

Preps For Hols And Preps For Writing

Well, the schools have been out for three weeks now and it's passed quickly and we've had fun. The uniform is bought and the name labels delivered (don't talk about the sewing on part yet please!)

Next week 'the man of the hoose' is off work and then we go on holidays the week after next. Yeyey!

And the good part of this? Besides days out; frequent bistro lunches en famille, 'together time' and the fact that our holiday hotel has a lovely spa?

Good part equals the odd bit of free time. To compost the idea that's brewing and jot down some notes.

Yes people, it's story starter for ten time. And I'm raring to get moving!

Treat Without A Visa Receipt

Okay, there's a credit crunch on and we have to be creative with our rewards so ... I've picked my treat to myself for 'just gettin' the darned book done'.

And here it is ... I picked out yummy pics for the characters. I don't let myself do this too early or I procrastinate and spend too much time online. Anyway, I think as couples go they're pretty yum. In fact I think they're perfect. Presenting Anna Faris and James McAvoy. Cool huh? Do they look like they're ready for a combustible romance adventure?

Today is a writing day (polish, polish and polish some more). It's pouring with rain. The kids have a minder. Now let's get to it and avoid all further internet distractions! If in doubt, just push through! jx

Writing. Fast. With Kids

As previously posted, it's the school summer hols (second week!) and unfortunately I'm in the midst of a 'get this book out of my head before my brain explodes' phase.

Sometimes I just need to write. Holidays or no holidays. Commitments or no commitments (ask my lovely friend who came to see me and stoutly accepted my need to spend frequent periods getting word count done! Now that's friendship!)

Anyway. I generally find that if I stop I lose momentum and it all goes awry. So ... here's my top tips for ensuring you get word count and don't have to deprive your kids during the hols. It can be done:

If your time is precious - treat it Nanowrimo style. Get a wordcount spreadsheet or word worm up and running and make it your mission to keep it moving up. Commit to that wordcount and make it rise in an OCD manner.
Treat it like a baton passing exercise! As soon as the hubbie comes in, or the kids are in bed, do 'Write or Die' or set a timer and just make yourself write at top speed! Limited time means get cracking! No time to waste! Don't worry if you're not in the mood - make yourself write yourself out of your funk instead!
Keep a notebook at the ready. Always. By the bed, by the loo, in your handbag. And postit notes are handy on the kitchen window ledge (my secret weapon). Sometimes inspiration strikes at the most inappropriate times. The notebook means you don't have to lose it. Jot it down. Sort it later!
Try to keep the story moving forward in your head. Keep working out that next scene. So what if previous bits need major surgery and a strong injection of plausibility? You just have to crack on because slowing is not an option! Just as 'Keep It Simple' is a great motto, so is 'Just Crack On'.
Accept that you might need late nights to achieve your objective (it's okay, you'll indulge in some earlies once it's done and polished! For now just push, push, push to The End!)
Reward - a treat is necessary for such hard graft. Surprise yourself with a pressie once you've done it!

The Hitchcock Seagull

It's the school Summer holidays here in Scotland and Monday started wonderfully - scorching, glorious day.

Yesterday and today not so much. It's very rainy and the tent in the garden is soggy (should've brought it in!) To crown my day yesterday a seagull divebombed me! True. I didn't even see it but it spied me, launched and managed to hit me in the face with its wing. I was shocked and rather miffed. Fortunately I had my hood up (see above re rain) or it would've been scarier.

And to add insult ... it divebombed again with a rather special present that just missed messing my jeans. Have the seagulls gone nutso? Does too much fast food turn a seagull terminator? Or is it sign I should just stay inside and avoid low flying seabirds?

Just read Sarah Morgan's latest Modern - Doukakis's Apprentice - cover to cover.

A most fabulous read and I couldn't put it down.

Loved the heroine from start to finish and ooh la la what a hero. You know I love my Greek boyz - whew! Damon is a peach. Buy this book and melt. Gimme, gimme, gimme more, she hollered in an irrational voice.

Someone calm me down.

I'm afraid my April Word Count Challenge didn't meet the mark. Sorry. And I'm pretty downcast at not getting nearly enough writing time in April. Basically it was a way too busy month on the family front.

But it's not as bad as my word worm would suggest. I did manage to write 4,000 words by hand. I just need to get them typed and then crack on. So here's the deal. I intend to keep the April Word Count Challenge Worm up and running in May because I need to finish! Let's hope this time I crack it.

I have some very exciting news coming soon. (I'm not being a tease, I can't say yet!) But soon! Very soon.

Welcome Amber ... Tell us about your book. What inspired it and how would you sum up your hero?

Hi Judy! Thanks for having me! Blackest Heart is the first book in my western romance trilogy, the Ridges of Wayback, TX – which features the three Ridge family siblings, Keefe, Casey, and Stella. Blackest Heart is Stella’s story. A horrible accident forces her to reevaluate what she wants from life. Though she’s an actress in high demand in Hollywood, she gives it all up to return to her roots in Wayback, TX. She also finds sexy silent cowboy, Judd Black. He turns out to be the only one who can offer her to escape and solace she needs to heal.

Judd is hard to sum up in a few words because, even to me, he’s a bit of an enigma. He’s a bull-rider so I would definitely classify him as an alpha. Those alpha tendencies have been hampered by the trauma of his past, though. If you think Stella’s past is harrowing, wait until you read his. In Blackest Heart, his relationship with Stella and the strong disapproval of her big brother, Keefe, brings out all those delicious alpha tendencies and then the sparks really fly ;)

2. When and how did you start writing? Do you have a particular process – night owl or early bird? Plotter or pantser? Do you like to get down a word count every day?

I began writing in the third grade, plays and short stories. I progressed onto young adult fiction a bit later. When I was fourteen, I read my first romance and knew instantly that that was what I wanted to write for the rest of my life. I completed my first romance manuscript (Forever Amore, LASR Best Book of 2009 Nominee) when I was eighteen. In 2006, I began writing full-time.

I don’t think I’m either a plot or a pantser. Whatever they call someone who’s in between. I am most definitely a night owl, though. Something about the dark pressing against the windows and the still quiet that comes after a certain time of night really gets my muse going.

3. Tell us your call story - and where were you five years ago with your writing?

My first call was actually an email. It was really late because my husband and I were just getting back from dinner at my parents’ house. I had this weird urge to check my email once before bed and there it was. The funny part of the story is that the next day, before I could respond, both my printer and my computer died. It was a nightmare. Luckily, my second call from a separate publisher was much more auspicious (I spotted two rainbows the day of!).

Five years ago I was just branching out into the publishing/submission world and I hadn’t learned what my writing voice was or if I even had one. I vividly remember crying over my first rejection. It’s amazing how much five years can teach you. I feel like a totally different writer.

4. Which is your own favorite heroine and why?

It’s a tie between Stella, from Blackest Heart, and Lucille from Forever Amore. I put them both through so much during the course of their stories – more than I put my average heroine through, which is quite a lot. It’s that slight guilt complex that every writer feels, I think, when they push characters to their breaking point. I identify more with Lucille, despite the fact that she’s Italian.

5 Fave authors - who inspires you and why?

Nora Roberts has always been my favorite writer. I enjoy her J.D. Robb titles, too. I’m a big fan of Roarke. She’s a natural born storyteller and I really admire how prolific she is and the fact that her writing is completely organic. She flies completely by the seat of her pants and still the book comes out smooth and flowing and the world she paints is rich and lush…. Can you tell I’m a huge fan?

Similarly, J.R. Ward’s process is fascinating to me, too. She outlines heavily before writing the first draft of her paranormals. The thing I most admire about her is her world building abilities. I lose myself completely in her stories.

6. Fave hero inspirations - go on ... who really makes your eyes pop! Any particular hero inspirations for particular books? What are your ultimate hero qualities?

Did I not mention Roarke? LOL Roarke and Mr. Darcy are two fine members of the hero club and my idea of the ultimate hero. I tend to initially model heroines after real people. Heroes, not so much. They’re mine, all mine J

And if there is a hero club, by the way, I’d like to know where it is and how I can get there immediately! ;)

7. Advice for budding writers?

Never give up. I’ve known one or two writers who have and it’s incredibly sad. My first manuscript took five years from the time of completion to publish. I even have a plaque on my desk that says, “Never, never, never give up!” It should be every writer’s litany.

8. What are you working on next - ambitions for a couple of years from now?

At the moment, I’m almost at the end of my paranormal romance series, which my agent is currently finding a home for. I also just completed a major contemporary romance revision and it looks like we might be putting that into circulation soon, I hope. In a few years, I would love to be more widely distributed but mostly I want to still find the joy in writing I always have. Besides family, that escape is what’s most important to me.

9. Your writing community - where and who have helped you on your way?

I joined Romance Writers of America in June of 2007 as well as the Gulf Coast Chapter of RWA, and a few months later I received my first publishing contract. It’s no coincidence that one happened after the other. I credit RWA and GCCRWA for getting me that far so quickly toward my publishing dream. I also would be nowhere without the WritingGIAM community that I’m a part of online. GIAM members are all excellent writers and wonderful people who inspire me to no end.

10. Revisions - love em or hate em. What nugget of advice would you give about tackling revisions?

Ai, revisions. I don’t love them but I do think they’re necessary. My first manuscript went through no less than six revisions before it was contracted. If life has taught me anything, it’s that change is often necessary in order to move forward in both life and career. Writing is no exception.

Someone, Handcuff My Heroine!

Well I'm cracking on with my cowboy. His name is Gabe and I like him RATHER a lot.

His heroine is Jess and she's just rather - busy. And ballsy. And getting herself tied in knots while the hero is just watching thinking - is this woman mad? Why doesn't she chill, slow down, delegate, smell the coffee?

Anyway, I'm now feeling very bad for Gabe. Because the unforeseen has reared its scary gnashers.

As usually happens when I start writing on and on (most especially I find if I plan a syno) the characters have gone AWOL and the heroine's just done something I didn't see coming at all. And it's shocked me sideways.

How VERY dare she indeed?

Bad woman. I'm going off her. But that's characters for ya!

So is it just me - or do the things you plan for rarely happen in your books? Does the unexpected usually occur when you're all synopsis-ed up? Or is it just me who gets in a pickle with the surprises as soon as I commit to a summary blurb?

NOTE TO SELF: Judy Jarvie must never sub an unfinished book! The gremlins in her brain will roast it on the bonfire of the unexpected and batter it with bizarre plot twists! Remember this! Step sloooooowly away and put the syno gun on the ground. On with the handcuffs.

Yellow Roses

Last week a very lovely friend bought me Yellow Roses (I love yellow roses, always have - actually I love lots of roses but yellow in particular or dark pink always make me go wow!) I'm a roses and freesias girl (hint to husband - only kidding!)

Anyhoo ...

The roses were particularly apt because right now I'm 'writing me a cowboy'. Yup! And he's mighty fine (it's okay - I only go into stereotypical Texan speak when I talk ABOUT him).

Anyway. Just had to share that. My cowboy, Gabe, is coming along nicely. And my roses are in a vase - in his honour! Happy smile!

Grumpy McStumpy

Today I was not in a good mood.

I had plans ... things I wanted to do ... words I wanted to write. But disaster struck at school bus/exit house time when I realised ... HELP MY KEYS ARE MISSING.

So - had to leave the house (unlocked - psssst don't tell the local burglars!) in order to get kidlets to school. Searched the house. High low and everywhere in between. Pulled out beds, sofas, drawers. You name it I've snooped under it and run my hand down the back of it. No joy.

Enter - heroine Mother. She went and had not one, but two spares cut. To enable me to leave the house for school home time! Bless her, she really is a gem (and I mean that!)

My final 'if I must' look location was - yep, you've guessed it - the garbage, the trashcan, the dustbin from HELL! Not my favourite job on the list but I'd exhausted all other options.

And there lurking under last night's stinky salmon ... and potato salad ... and barbie hair (don't ask, she doesn't stand a chance in our house, think Toy Story 3 Toddler Room but worse) - THERE WERE MY KEYS. AWAITING DISPOSAL.

I wouldn't mind but last week eldest snaffled my 'gum shield' - yes I have one - and put it in her handbag! It's not good to feel so challenged by the swift and agile fingers in one's home.

Grumpy.

Stinky.

And not best pleased.

In Love ...

With Tangled.

We went to see it this weekend (after frequent promises to the kidlets) and in a near empty cinema! Oh I love the joys of a near empty cinema, worth the wait!

But I digress. The film left me reeling and smitten and wanting to see it a squillion times again. Here's why -

Cracking breakneck breathless pace that is just awesome.
Characters that are so good you just want to lick the screen (providing it's germ free). But seriously - THAT good.
Twists on the classic traditional fairytale that just make it so so so much more and better, better, fab.
Wondrous animation to marvel at! And great songs too.

So - at the risk of becoming a Tangled bore - I will simply say, if you haven't yet, go see it. And yes I will be buying the DVD. If only to enjoy hero Flynn's witty dialogue yet again! Even more excitingly the Tangled book is due to arrive from the school book fair later this week (squeak!)

P.S. If you need further proof - the kids loved it even more than me! Desperate to go straight back again. Now that's a hearty recommendation.

Well - my blog conga (huge thanks to all who helped/assisted/put up with me) is at a close! Phew! It's been a rollercoaster few weeks and great fun. But life has to go on. Indeed.

I have things to write. People to knit. Actually that should read balls of wool. Cakes to eat (actually no that's out because I've cracked my tooth and am awaiting dental appointment via hesitant bites!)

Oh and today I have expensive shoes for small people to buy that will involve lights, sequins and the colour pink in abundance. Life goes on. So. Time to work, work, busy, busy.

Chums and regular frequenters of the blog will know I love the eighties. I’m a child of the eighties – day glo is my colour theme of choice. I don’t know much but I do know lots of inane trivia about eighties bands and I have an uncanny knack for getting eighties song release dates on the money. Plus I sported some haircuts in the past that reveal the heinous level of my eighties fashionista credentials!!!

All I will say is trendy - but gruesome.

So - if the eighties comes up in a pub quiz – I, my friend, rub my hands with relish and prepare to enjoy myself to the max.

Which is why Transatlantic Loving was right up my Electric Avenue.

When I saw that fellow Wild Rose author Rachel Brimble had written a novella for WRP’s Class of 85 continuity series – I was rather keen to purchase it! I'd read some other of the series titles and enjoyed them. And boy am I glad I bought this one.

It transported me back in an instant. As good as watching an episode of Glee. Not only is this setting a treat - the characters are fantastic. Immediately I wanted to be Lisa’s friend and go out dancing to Chaka Khan with sassy Courtney. Right from the off I was panting for Aaron Hot Sports Coach Taylor. Well ... who wouldn't?

Amid the hell of an eighties reunion dance – two souls collide and sparks crescendo. Aaron Taylor falls for Lisa Cavendish at first sight. The banter is quick and jabby and has you pleading for more. The chemistry sparks off the page. I smiled and giggled aloud a great many times.

Without spoiling it – this is the story of two people from different parts of the globe who have a short space of time to pursue something magical (and hormonally enticing). Instead they have to face their own past wounds as well as a few hurdles to love. And they do so with humour and maturity. The HEA is well worth the wait.

If you love the eighties – if your heart still hankers for lacey fingerless gloves, Madonna and the thrill of pursuing your inner teen in a ra-ra skirt – then buy this book you won’t regret it. In summary - it’s even more satisfying than a Pat Benatar fix (and that’s mighty fine let me tell ya!)

So Transatlantic Loving is firmly in my cyber keeper shelf. Well done Rachel! I’m off to gel my hair and relive those good times!

Right now I’ve got a thing for Joe Manganiello – 6 foot 5 inches of werewolf muscle on HBO’s True Blood. Here he is:

Honestly, I don’t usually have inspiration for the hero’s in my books. However, I think I’m going to have to base one off Joe. What do you think? LOL

My ultimate hero is: Strong, Sexy (not to be confused with being beautiful or handsome, as a hero doesn’t have to be either to be sexy. Although the heroine thinks he is), Flawed (who wants perfection? How boring. J) and completely devoted to the heroine.

7. Advice for budding writers?

Everyone will have a bit of advice for you. Listen to it, decide how much of it you think works for you and ignore the rest. Seriously. I listened to everything. I changed the way I wrote, I changed my stories to try to fit a certain mold…it was frustrating, exhausting and got me no where. It darn near destroyed my voice. Luckily, I’m learning to ignore all that bad advice and getting my voice back.

Oh, and don’t let anything stand in the way of your dream. Especially your own fear!

8. What are you working on next - ambitions for a couple of years from now?

My next project is a reunion romance I’ve titled MIDNIGHT HEAT. It’s a spin-off of AFTER MIDNIGHT, my contemporary romance with rock singer hero Noah Clark. MIDNIGHT HEAT features Noah’s best friend and bassist, Dominic Price.

9. Your writing community - where and who have helped you on your way?

My biggest supporters are my husband, my mother and my sister. Whenever I’m struggling, I’ll give one of them a call. Sometimes I’ll call them because I’m excited about the way the story’s coming along. It’s during those calls I get the ‘That’s nice, Sarah, so why are you calling me instead of writing?’ That’s my sister and my mother; they’re always reminding me that I should be writing instead of cleaning the house or surfing the internet.

My husband supports me in different way altogether. I guess I’d have to say that the biggest way he supports me is to keep everyone out of my hair when I’m writing and by not complaining when he gets fed drive thru four nights in a row when I’m on deadline or working on edits.

10. Revisions - love em or hate em. What nugget of advice would you give about tackling revisions?

Love ‘em! I love digging into the story and making it stronger.

As authors we become attached to every word in our stories, but they’re not all necessary or even good words. So my advice is: don’t be afraid of the delete button. I just deleted about four paragraphs from my opening scene in After Midnight, during this last round of edits. I did it because of something my editor had said BEFORE she contracted the book, not even something she said during edits. Taking out that hint of the heroine’s past tightened up the opening scene and made it stronger.

So don’t be afraid to delete a few of your words, no matter how attached you are to them. If it’s too painful, you can always paste them into a new document and save them.

Today I have a lovely visitor - fellow Wild Rose Press author Sarah Grimm. Sarah's just had her book Not Without Risk nominated for the LASR Best Book of 2010! Yey Sarah! I'm very pleased she's popped over to share some of her secrets!

1. Tell us about your LASR nominated book - Not Without Risk. What inspired it and how would you sum up your hero?

Sergeant Justin Harrison is on top of his game. He is impulsive, insatiable and invincible. At least he’d always believed so—until an addict with a .38 showed him otherwise. Six agonizing months after the slug collapsed his lung, Justin has managed to return to the one thing he excels at – his job as a San Diego homicide detective. He worked hard to get his body back in shape and nothing is going to stand in his way of proving he is fit for active duty. Especially not a long-legged brunette who just stumbled into his crime scene.

Photographer Paige Conroy spent years hiding from her past. Then one late night telephone call brings it crashing back. An old friend is in town and needs to see her. Speaking on the phone isn’t safe. She needs to meet him. Only four hours later, when she arrives at his hotel room, it is to find him dead. Fighting against the painful onslaught of memories, as well as the horror of being the only witness to murder, the last thing Paige needs is to feel attracted to the dark-eyed Sergeant Harrison.

When the villain sets his sights on Paige, she must turn to Justin for help. Together they learn that some things are worth the risk.

I honestly don’t know what inspired me to write NOT WITHOUT RISK. It was a story that just came to me one day. I guess it would be more accurate to say that the hero, Justin, came to me one day. It’s definitely Justin’s story.

How would I sum up Justin? He’s a wounded alpha hero. Not a believer in happily-ever-after, he doesn’t have relationships with women, he has sex. So his job is all that he has. It defines him. For thirteen years he’s lived it, breathed it, and been happy. Only recently he’s wondered if it’s enough.

I was thrilled when, just a few weeks ago, I learned NOT WITHOUT RISK was nominated for the Long and Short of It’s BEST BOOK of 2010. LASR called the book “…fast paced, nail biting, page turning, edge of your seat suspense…”

2. When and how did you start writing? Do you have a particular process - nightowl or early bird? Plotter or pantster? Do you like to get down a word count every day?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I have notebooks filled with poems, story ideas, and partial chapters from as far back as age five. Yes, thanks to my older sister, I could read and write by age five. And I did. I read everything I could get my hands on, usually re-writing the story in my head as I went. If you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered something different depending on the day. I couldn’t make up my mind. Then I picked up my first romance novel. Suddenly I had my answer: “I want to get married, have children and write romances.”

When I got married, I set my writing aside. I focused on my husband and building a family. Then my youngest son was born and the struggle to keep him alive began. By the time we were done, my baby had endured stomach surgery, throat surgery, and a tracheotomy with all the special care that entails. As you can imagine, all the hospital time left me desperate for a distraction, so I took pen to paper, yup, longhand, and wrote my first romance. Not just bits and pieces of a book, but the entire hero and heroine’s journey from ‘Chapter One’ to ‘The End’.

I don’t have a process—I’m a pantser who squeezes in writing time between bookkeeping for my husband’s business, and taxiing my kids around. All hours of the day you’ll find me scribbling in a notebook. Most of my writing is still done longhand, because my characters choose the darnedest times to start talking!

3. Tell us your call story - and where were you five years ago with your writing?

My call was actually an email telling me that they wanted to publish my romantic suspense, NOT WITHOUT RISK. It came about five years ago from a publisher called Triskelion. I submitted to them just after they received RWA recognition, and they accepted it. I wasn’t with a big NY publisher, but I didn’t care. I was going to be published.

When Triskelion began having problems, I was one of the authors who saw it coming but was helpless to do anything about it. RISK had just been released, and they’d accepted my second book on proposal. After they folded, I stopped writing for a while. The joy was gone. Thankfully, I’m back to it and having more fun than ever before.

4. Which is your own favourite heroine and why?

Isabeau Montgomery (AFTER MIDNIGHT, which is in edits now): Owner of Izzy’s Bar, child prodigy, piano phenom—a woman who is hiding behind a lie of her own making. She’s just so very tortured, her past so full of tragedy… She deserves a happy ending and Noah is just the man to share it with her.

5. Fave authors - who inspires you and why?

Some of my favorite authors include Tess Gerritsen, Kay Hooper, & Dianne Emley. Romantic Suspense and thrillers inspire me the most, even though after the first romantic suspense, my writing tends to be contemporary romance with just a touch of suspense/danger.

Yes. It's all been happening. We just won't talk about what's been happening to me as it's gruesome.

Sorry I've been absent and quiet.

We've had a lot on. Birthday snow (yes it started again). Power cuts (don't ask!) To name but a few.

Oh yes and I've been knitting too:
One hat
Seven scarves
One fingerless mitten (um...got bored and haven't finished other one).

And thanks so much to all who left me their lovely birthday wishes. I didn't have a sore head or party myself silly. I was very restrained (shines halo!)

Though the same cannot be said for the friend's 40th Birthday Bonanza this weekend. Double Naughty Quota was exceeded.

Flirting With The Fireman will be out soon - cue cheers of hysteria. For all you lovely people with shiny new Kindles - there'll be a fabby addition to your digital shelf coming later this month. It's got a hot fireman, and a fiery heroine.

I won't labour the details on my week's bad news - about me getting stuck in thick slush and ice and water and being unable to move the car.

Hello all.

It's official. Nobody loves us. The Scots that is.

Next and M&S and a whole host of stores don't want our Scottish purchases online because they can't promise to deliver because we've been so frozen up. The snow has sent us to Coventry!

Though actually it beats me why folk would rush online to buy their Xmas pressies when the poor postie can't even get up the path (apply braincells people!)

Yes we've had a thaw (a thaw that still involves lots of ridgy and hard to navigate ice) but it has meant I escaped the house via bus (hurrah!) Now I'm just waiting with baited breath to see what develops re the next big cold snap! Hides in terror. Quakes in fear.

So youngest has a sparkly new snowsuit (cute) and she looks snugger than a very snug thing
Tomorrow it's her Xmas party - please Mr Snow be kind. She missed her Xmas Concert! And there's a rumour that a jolly fellow in red will be in attendance (please note Next - if HE can do it why can't you?)
Eldest can't wait to get her ordered snowboots (very pink, very large)
Eldest can't wait until her Friday afternoon Xmas party (something to do with the multi sequinned dress in the wardrobe - diva, diva, diva)
And I have finished all my shopping (well I do tend to start in January) and tonight is my chum's meet up Christmas Meal With The Mums. Hurrah! Crackers, hats and mirth.

On an extra point - thank heaven for the ereader because it means I don't have to get out to book binge. It really is a wizard invention and I boggle at its wonderfulness often (snowbound readership potential abounds!)

So I'll love you and leave you. And lets hope - not too cold again, not too much white stuff please! My nerves can't take more.

Cabin Fever

Hello Gang.

Did I mention we had more dire snow on Monday?

Yes it's true. Thankfully I didn't go to my old Hendon Times works' reunion bash on Sunday or I'dve been stranded in Luton muttering to myself clasping a hot chocolate. Missed the old gang however. Can't beat a bunch of journos for a few drinks and a lot of gossip. They had a great time without me and I've had the full debrief from a lovely pal (who didn't even dance on the table - we must be getting old).

Hubbie's car was stuck in Edinburgh though he did get back. He's going to get winter tyres fittes asap (yes, he's been reading the huge manual to get to grips with his traction issues - boom boom!)

And now it's starting to thaw.

The sun is out though my windscreen wipers don't seem to want to come unstuck or be resuscitated. And maybe if this keeps up we might see the grass again by March.

Yes. The snow really is that high. So high our drive is a toboggan run.

The school reopened yesterday. I also nearly lost the littlest kidlet down an uncovered manhole.

Now I appreciate what Santa Claus has to deal with. The man deserves a pay rise. Or at least a sat nav and a can of deicer for Christmas.

Snow Is Falling ...

Snow is falling - all around me.

My garden looks like a Christmas cake and it just keeps falling. Today I finally hammered my NaNo into submission - so here's a track to celebrate (!) amid the blizzards.

Normally I'm the last person in the street to put up the tree, so posting a video is uncharacteristic Christmassy behaviour for November. But last weekend we did the whole Xmas lights parade thing so it feels okay to indulge. (I hasten to add that my tree does not appear until we are at least double figures into December and this will remain!)

So, to the video. Am I the only person who feels sorry for the woman on the sleigh dressed up as an elf? Is it having to sit next to Shaky that's making her quaky? Or his threat of mistletoe kisses? She really does look like she's saying bad things about him in her head. Personally I'd jump and make a getaway.

I adore this video. If only for Shaky's taste in Christmas jumpers and his finger-clicking dancing. Then there's the pudding-basin haircut children destroying their toys with hammers.

It doesn't get better than this. Or should that be worse?

The NaNo Slump And Bouncing Back

The mentors for NaNo warned us - you might dry up, hit a wall. Great if it doesn't happen but if it does and every word is laboured that's okay, push through. At the time of reading these words I was gaily marching ahead. Whistling a chirpy song as I typed.

Then SLUMP hit. Oh boy, with a thump.

Last week I had missed days. Days where I didn't even want to go there such was my disgust. Times when what I was writing was so far into the pits it was down in the corner of the castle dungeon (the one where the tide washes in for extra punishment). Yep. Bad week. But yesterday I forced myself not to play hookie or think about it and just go for gusto writing (like I did on day one).

And slowly I'm getting back in the saddle of the daily try. Of course I know this story is not just a dog's dinner draft. It's a dire dirty dismal dirge and it will need lots of rewrite and much work. But that's NaNo. It's good to have a start. It's good to go back and refine and polish and rethink.

This is what happened with Nanny.

I rewrote. I started right back on page one and made it much better. It can be done.

So if you're on this NaNo journey and you've just hit a wall or pushed through with all you have. Or even if you've given up the ghost - well done. Writing is hard. But it's worth going ahead and doing it anyway! It's all about having the conviction to try and that is very BRAVE indeed.

Not Everyone Gets One Like This

It's only a very special couple who get this treatment - a special Mills and Boon cover made in their honour. But then William and Kate are very special! And they're living the dream.

While I'm not quite sure why I was sent a copy by MnBs PR people (who me?!) I won't look a gift horse in the mouth and will just celebrate anyway and post it up because it's a beauty.

Shame we can't read the book now too.

The Pinnacle of Brilliant

Since I'm NaNoFlagging, I took a break by reading Graham Linehan's blog (he brilliantly writes The IT Crowd). Read his excellent blog here. Anyway - I've pinched this clip because it was too good not to. Laugh out loud funny. Especially if you are bizarrely addicted to Masterchef *like me*. Can't explain the Greg and John addiction but I never miss an episode (especially if I have a tube of Pringles).
The IT Crowd will be on E4 on Monday at 10pm.

Write Or Die

Yes I've resorted to Write Or Die to keep me at Nano.

The thing is I am loving this story and I know it's working out. I JUST WANT TO STOP for a bit and get my breath back. I yearn for a few leisurely daydreams about these characters instead of frog-marching them onwards with their arms up their backs. Though I am giving them a hard time which is good.

The trouble is I get guilt pangs and I think but the faster I go now the quicker it's over! And I keep adding a bit more.

The Write Or Die concept works a treat. For those who don't know about it, you enter how many words you want to achieve or how long you want to write for and then you hit WRITE. The computer will give you a telling off if you stop. The aim is just to keep writing ... keep it going. You can choose modes depending on your mood. But I find the screen slowly changing from pink to scarlet is a good one for me. If you hold off too long it will GOBBLE UP the words already written word by word. And when I use Write Or Die it makes me type furiously (reminds me of WPM tests in secretarial agencies when trying to get summer jobs) to see if I can keep on without causing the computer to tell me off. Go try it, it's fun!

Anyway, it's a great way to whip my behind when I'm grouchy about writing. Especially when you use the tough mode that eats your words up if you loiter! Who wants pacman gobbling up hard-won sentences? Not I!

Suddenly ...

Amazing what a week can do. My (at first uptight and nerdy) hero is now warming nicely. The heroine's a bit trickier but ... gimme time. I might even write more later just to torture him at a vital stage. He's about to make a big mistake and get into a lot of trouble.

Well, it's cold outside. Who needs to go out when you can annoy your characters instead?

Happily I'm also reading Trish Wylie's Charmed By The Billionaire Bad Boy. So I'm feeling very blessed with hotboy totty. Such trials!

Noodle Nano

Yey. I'm at 13k.

BUT. And it's a big but (notice capitals) I'm pretty sure it's about to go noodles up. Surely it must says Ms Pesky Pessimist inside me. I've stormed ahead and now it's all going to go dangly.

So at this point here's my top tips (prior to going noodly and losing it):
1 Just write it. Don't worry, be happy. Write whatever strikes.

2 If it's pants, don't panic, write it. Don't expect it to be good. Don't panic if its big yaboodire-as-a-dodo chow mein to go. It's good for the fingers and the pong of joie de vivre reeks large.

3 Sling in a corpse through the roof (this is my favourite). Surprising myself every day with a fresh twist. Ah well, a gal's gotta get kicks somehow when she's churning out 2k a day. Especially when it's pants filled with noodles.

4 Don't moan. Don't stress it. Just write a bit more. Take solace in the soaring word graph and ignore the conscience that's screaming that it's pants. Pants can be fixed and turned into hot pants (with enough natty snips and restitching). And obviously after ditching all the dried noodles.

Righto. Best go not think about it some more. Back to just doing it again tomorrow.

P.S. I must at this point clarify that a book wot I have written that is very close to my heart was rewritten in full several times. It can be done! Nano - we salute you!

My NaNo Strategy

I won't complain because I vowed to just keep on trucking with NaNo this week and although I have thought 'ugh' before I start each day it's turned out okay.

Sad confession time - I really, really wanted to hit 10k today.

Foolish, greedy - maybe? But I just figured if I'd gotten 2k down daily during weekdays then I could ease at weekends to give me some headspace before Monday. I'm a hundred under so I'm resisting complaining. I'm almost there but I am going to stop.

It's Bonfire Night plus a busy afternoon of being Mum Taxi. I'm going to quit at just under 10k today. But tomorrow I'm going to try for 3k. The Saturday 3k challenge. The aim of this being that I can then maybe take Sunday off and just chill. A chill day is good for the soul.

Am I turning NaNo OCD bore? Should I just shut up now and stop the obsessing?

Or do you have a strategy too? Are you NaNo NUTSO yet too ? Discuss (!)

Once upon a time ...

I found myself doing spur of the moment NaNoWriMo.

It's all happened in a Mr Benn-type way (one minute I was minding my business walking down Festive Road and then yank - the fancy dress shop of NaNo pulled me in and I signed up!) I suddenly find myself in a new world of pantster wonder that's both thrilling and slightly perplexing at the same time.

Well it would be crazy to start writing a new book on 1 November without joining in the madness. So here I am (the last time I did it was 2004 and my but that's a while back). So bring on the safari suit, I'm ready. Or shall I be an astronaut?

Whispers lest Editor should crack whip - s'okay, revisions are almost pucker and coming your way!

Oh what a heady whirl (but I luvit). jx

Super Fast Acceptance

I'm gobsmacked to report that I sold a story last night. Only subbed it on Thursday. New Love Stories magazine accepted Sweet Surrender, the story of a tasty chef and the woman who's after more than his pastries. I'll post the publication time when it comes. I do like nice surprises. jx
